Vishranthi, a home for the aged, was established in 1978 as a project of the Monday (Charity) Club. Vishranthi caters to destitute women over 60 years of age who have no one to care for them. It provides food, shelter, clothing, medicines, and, above all, compassion and an honourable end.

Mrs. Savithri Vaithi is the driving force behind the Vishranthi Project. Through her dedication and commitment, she has transformed the lives of innumerable people. She believes that basic comfort during life and dignity in death are fundamental rights. Mrs. Vaithi has ensured this comfort for the inmates, personally performing the last rites for countless destitute women.

The socio-economic scenario in the country has drastically changed from joint-family to nuclear-family systems. This shift has forced both spouses to seek employment to sustain their families, resulting in a new set of problems for aged parents, especially women. These problems include lack of security at home, feelings of loneliness, and the unavailability of urgent help during medical emergencies.

As early as 1978, when these issues were still emerging, the late Mrs. Savithri Vaithi foresaw the growing need for support for elderly women. She had a clear vision of the future challenges and took intuitive steps to address these problems. Mrs. Vaithi founded Vishranthi, the first Old Age Home for Destitute Women in Chennai, starting with just one inmate.

Today, Vishranthi, under the administration and guidance of its trustees, has grown to support over 140 deserving women at its Old Age Home in Palavakkam, Chennai. The institution meets the basic physical, psychological, and emotional needs of these women.

Vishranthi ensures that only the most deserving destitute women are admitted. The inmates receive healthy food, decent clothing, comfortable shelter, and basic medical facilities. For those needing urgent medical help, staff nurses provide immediate assistance to help them return to normalcy. Women requiring long-term medical care are moved to a sick-room for exclusive attention.
